MPSC Syllabus: The Mizoram Public Service Commission (MPSC) conducts the Inspector of Excise & Narcotics exam for the Gazetted (Group B, Non-Ministerial) position. The selection process includes a written examination and a personal interview.

1. MPSC Syllabus Of GENERAL COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION

1.1 Examination Structure

  • The General Competitive Examination shall be conducted for posts that do not have specific subject-wise requirements and can be taken by any graduate from a recognized university.
  • The questions shall be of multiple-choice (objective type) as far as practicable.
  • The examination consists of two stages:
    1. Written Examination
    2. Personal Interview

  • Each paper will have a duration of 3 hours.
  • Candidates with benchmarked disabilities shall receive 20 minutes per hour as compensatory time, as per government guidelines.
  • The question papers will be set in English.
  • General Studies Papers I, II, and III shall have 50% conventional essay-type questions and 50% Objective/MCQ-type questions.
  • The Aptitude Test in General Studies Paper III will have objective and short-answer questions.
  • The Personal Interview will carry 100 marks.

1.3 MPSC Detailed Syllabus

1) General English (100 Marks)

(a) Précis Writing – 14 Marks
(b) Letter Writing – 10 Marks
(c) Comprehension of Given Passages – 10 Marks
(d) Grammar (Parts of Speech) – 30 Marks
(e) Correct Usage and Vocabulary – 16 Marks
(f) Formation of Sentences – 20 Marks

Grammar Topics:

  • Verbs and Tenses: Present/Past, Simple/Continuous, Perfect forms, Future Time Reference
  • Sentence Structure: Connectors, Affirmative/Interrogative, Negation, Exclamations
  • Types of Phrases & Clauses: Finite/Non-finite Subordinate Clauses, Noun, Adjective, and Adverb Clauses
  • Narration: Direct and Indirect Speech

2) MPSC General Essay (100 Marks)The paper will have two units, each with four topics.

  • Candidates must write two essays (one from each unit).
  • Each essay will be 1000 – 1200 words and carry 50 marks.

3) General Studies Paper – I (200 Marks)

  • Section I: MCQ-based (100 Marks)
    • 50 questions (each carrying 2 marks)
    • 25 questions from Unit A and 25 from Unit B
  • Section II: Conventional Essay-type (100 Marks)
    • Four questions from Unit A and Unit B each
    • Candidates must attempt 5 questions, taking at least two but not more than three from each unit

Unit A: History of Modern India and Indian Culture (100 Marks)

(i) British conquest of India – Bengal, Maharashtra, Sind; Resistance movements
(ii) Evolution of British rule over Princely States
(iii) Administrative, revenue, judicial, social, and educational changes under British rule
(iv) British economic policies and their impact:

  • Commercialization of Agriculture, Rural Indebtedness
  • Growth of Industrial Capitalism, Drain of Wealth, Christian Missions
    (v) Socio-religious movements and 19th-century reforms
    (vi) Revolt of 1857 and subsequent civil rebellions
    (vii) Indian National Movement, Gandhian Mass Movements, Quit India Movement, Rise of Communalism, INA, Naval Mutiny of 1946, Partition of India

Unit B: MPSC Current Events of National & International Importance (100 Marks)

4) General Studies Paper – II (200 Marks)

  • Section I: MCQ-based (100 Marks)
    • 50 questions (each carrying 2 marks)
    • 20 from Unit A, 20 from Unit B, and 10 from Unit C
  • Section II: Conventional Essay-type (100 Marks)
    • Candidates must attempt 5 questions (2 from Unit A, 2 from Unit B, 1 from Unit C)

Unit A: Indian Polity (80 Marks)

(i) Evolution of Modern Indian Political Thought: Raja Rammohan Roy, Gokhale, Tilak, Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, Nehru
(ii) Indian Constitution – Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, Union & State Governments, Parliament, Supreme Court, Judiciary, Federalism, Panchayati Raj
(iii) Political Dynamics: Regionalism, Communalism, Secularism, Electoral Politics, Political Elites

Unit B: Indian Economy (80 Marks)

(i) Economic Policies – Planning, Growth, Poverty Eradication, Agricultural and Industrial Sectors
(ii) Agriculture – Land Reforms, Green Revolution, Rural Economy
(iii) Industrial Development – Public & Private Sector, Monopolistic Practices
(iv) Budgetary Trends, Fiscal & Monetary Policies, Banking & Financial Institutions
(viii) Foreign Trade and Balance of Payments

Unit C: Geography of India (40 Marks)

(i) Physical Features – Monsoons, Soil Types, Drought & Flood Prone Areas
(ii) Human Aspects – Population Distribution, Ethnic Groups, Tribal Issues
(iii) Agricultural & Industrial Geography
(iv) Transport & Trade – Road, Rail, Airways, Waterways
(v) Urbanization – Settlement Patterns, Slums, Housing Issues
(vi) Political Aspects – Federalism, Regional Consciousness, India’s Geopolitics

5) General Studies Paper – III (200 Marks)

  • Section I: MCQ-based (100 Marks)
    • 50 questions (each carrying 2 marks)
    • 20 from Unit A, 20 from Unit B, and 10 from Unit C
  • Section II: Conventional Essay-type (100 Marks)
    • Candidates must attempt 4 questions (2 from Unit A, 2 from Unit B)
    • Unit C will have objective short-answer questions

Unit A: Science & Technology in India’s Development (80 Marks)

  • Role & Impact of Science in Economic and Social Development
  • General Knowledge on Science, Discoveries, and Innovations

Unit B: History, Cultural Heritage & General Knowledge about Mizoram (80 Marks)

  • Pre and Post-British History of Mizoram
  • Cultural Traditions, Folk Songs, Festivals, Customary Laws
  • Political, Economic, and Social Events after Independence

Unit C: Aptitude Test (40 Marks)

(i) Numerical & Figurework Tests (12 Marks) – Number series, Pattern Identification
(ii) Verbal Analysis & Vocabulary Tests (12 Marks) – English Language Reasoning
(iii) Visual & Spatial Ability Tests (8 Marks) – Perceptual Speed & Acuity
(iv) Abstract Reasoning Tests (8 Marks) – Logical Pattern Recognition

1.4 Personal Interview (100 Marks)

  • Evaluates personality, communication skills, and subject knowledge
